Table 5 Different phases of analysis of the event-related measures of joint attention behaviour (JAB) during collaborative problem solving (CPS)

From: Joint attention behaviour in remote collaborative problem solving: exploring different attentional levels in dyadic interaction

Phase of the analysis

Data source/level

Analysis/coding procedure

Target, expected output

Prior analysis

Raw eye-tracking data

To segment raw eye-tracking data into gaze fixations and compute scan path videos utilising BeGaze analysis software

Visualisations of eye events as scan path videos

Phase 1

Pair-level log data

To code the initiating and responsive actions on the log file

To search for sequential characteristics of the log data (chat and actions) as meaningful events related to JAB, seen in relation to CPS

Phase 2

Visualised gaze data (i.e. scan path videos), individual level (students A and B), meaningful events related to JAB in CPS, chosen in the previous phase

To code the location and order of the eye events at specific areas of interest (AOIs) during the selected events (to analyse for congruence; frame-by-frame analysis)

To identify whether and how data reinforce or modify the initial interpretation of the interaction, based on the log file only, to better understand the interactional event at the pair level

  1. Note. The table includes the different phases of the analysis, a description of the manual coding procedure and the target or expected outcome(s)
